One of the most popular clubs at CMS West is Youth and Government. This beneficial program helps kids better understand how the government works as well as bringing them into the world of lawmaking and debate! One of 2 major events in YG is the annual District Conference. In District, an event that mimics real legislature, students, referred to as delegates, present bills (first draft of a possible law) that is then debated by other delegates in the room. They debate the legibility of the bill, how effective it is, and how useful it would be. They then vote on the bill’s passing or failing. Arguably, the best part of the District Conference is the awards! One delegate is selected from each room as the best in their committee, as well as one team of chairs and clerks (moderators of the room). Of course, despite all this pressured debating for a whole day, it is also a day to be around friends and have a good time DESTROYING the competition! West has been preparing for this competition for quite a while, and it sure did pay off! Our West students won a large majority of the awards! We are so proud of all the students that attended!
